How we build our canoes

Quality

Canoes built in our shop in Atikokan use only the finest materials available. Local white cedar is used for the planks and ribs, while ash, oak, cherry or maple are the hardwoods used.

Paul Fletcher and Thelma Cameron sampling the raw materials

Thelma bending the stems

The one-piece stems are boiled, bent in a mold and carefully shaped to fit the ribs. They are attached with stainless steel screws.

The ribs are tapered to give strength to the bottom of the canoe where it is needed most. They are attached with brass ring-nails.

Nailing the ribs

Planking is the highest quality white cedar

The planking is the next step. Only clear quarter-sawn white cedar is used. White cedar is the traditional wood of choice for wooden canoe hulls. It is much less brittle than red cedar.

The planks are attached with brass tacks. We take care to choose wood for the best colour and grain pattern to create a strong and beautiful canoe.

Tacking the planks with brass canoe tacks

The planking is gently planed to give the canoe its smooth curves.

Stretching the canvas

Number 10 canvas is then stretched over the canoe. A non-lead filler is applied and sanded to prepare the canoe for painting.

The canoes, which come in ivory, bright red, deep loden green, and oxford blue, are fitted with hand-caned seats. The interior is finished with linseed oil and three coats of spar urethane, providing a beautiful and durable finish. The exterior is finished with four coats of marine enamel.

With cane seats and quality interior finishes, they look as good on the inside as they do on the outside

Fletcher canoes are beauties to behold...

Beauty

“When people first see our canoes, they are impressed with their beauty. First impressions are important, and I am proud when they notice the care I take in the construction and finish of our canoes, but…

Performance

… the real test comes in paddling one of these truly fine canoes. I invite you to do so in full confidence that there is no finer canoe on the market today.”
